Cuba arrests dissidents under cover of Iraq war: Reporters Without Borders
MONTREAL (AFP) - The Cuban government is taking advantage of the US-led war on Iraq (news - web sites) to unleash an unprecedented wave of repression on dissidents, a group defending freedom of expression said.
Reporters Without Borders noted especially the arrest Thursday of a leader of the Cuban independent press, writer and poet Raul Rivero, director of the independent agency Cuba Press.
Rivero's arrest "has taken the current wave of repression beyond another threshold," Reporters Without Borders secretary general Robert Menard said.
"The Cuban authorities are clearly taking advantage of the war in Iraq to crack down while the world looks elsewhere."
According to Menard, human rights in Cuba "can therefore be viewed as one of the first cases of collateral damage in the second Gulf War (news - web sites)."
Menard warned that human rights in other countries "could also soon suffer the same fate."
Since Tuesday, Cuban authorities have sent more than 70 journalists and opponents to the regime to prison, according to AFP's Havana bureau.
