The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University announces
A memorial celebration of the life and career of Professor Omeljan Pritsak
Friday, 20 October 2006, 2:00 p.m.

Omeljan Pritsak (7 April 1919 - 29 May 2006) was one of the leading
scholars of the twentieth century in the fields of Turkology and
Ukrainian history. He was appointed professor of linguistics and
Turkology at Harvard in 1964 and soon became instrumental in the
creation of a center for Ukrainian studies as well. Omeljan Pritsak
was the first Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of Ukrainian History, and
co-founder and long-time director of the Ukrainian Research Institute.
Tributes will be delivered by Michael S. Flier (Director of HURI and
Oleksandr Potebnja Professor of Ukrainian Philology), Edward L. Keenan
(Director, Dumbarton Oaks Research Center), George G. Grabowicz
(Dmytro Cyzevs'kyj Professor of Ukrainian Literature), Roman Szporluk
(Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of Ukrainian History, Emeritus) and
Richard Frye (Aga Khan Professor of Iranian, Emeritus). They will be
joined by former students offering remembrances: Lubomyr Hajda
(Associate Director, Ukrainian Research Institute), Frank Sysyn
(Director, Peter Jacyk Centre for Ukrainian Historical Research) and
Rev. Borys Gudziak (Rector, Ukrainian Catholic University).
A reception will follow the official program.
