A spy scandal with an academician, director of the Institute of Sorption and Problems of Ecology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Volodymyr Strelko (Institute researches the problems of radiation effects on living organisms) occurred in Ukraine
According to the scientist´s colleagues, Security Service officers searched the office and measured background radiation 19 December. Strelkov himself was absent. He was in the USA before and stays there now. Institute employees knew that their chief was suspected of espionage for America, «Segodnya» says.
Law enforcement sources told that the Security Service drew attention to the Institute of Sorption for almost two years ago. They received information that Strelko supposedly sent data related to Chernobyl and the health of the Ukrainian nation to American colleagues via the Internet. «And seemed to get big grants from the U.S. for the research,» the source says.
The Institute declines the charges of espionage. «Any scientist understands that no work is possible without the exchange of information. This is not an espionage!,» Strelkov colleague, member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Valeriy Zazhihalov says. «There is always a common interest in science.»
Deputy Director, Mr Bray assures that the Director is not a spy but a developer of new technology: «They think we poison people with radiation. But it is not true! The Director has found some sort of technology, but he could not give it without the proper permits. He is an academician, why would he ruin his reputation?»
